Why?
Listening to Learn is the result of Discover’s extensive experience of engaging children in decision making with the Discover Children’s Forum. The Forum has been working in all aspects of Discover’s development and strategic direction ranging from designing the Story Trail, contributing to exhibitions and developing programmes. The Discover Children’s Forum is a DCMS / CABE model of good practice.
Building on the success of the Forum, Listening to Learn is a new approach to school based children’s participation in local regeneration. It explored the role of the arts as carriers of ideas and meaning in listening to children’s voices in relation to urban regeneration issues and also the role of children as peer mentors and consultants. Listening to Learn aspired to creating a new model for regeneration professionals and children to work together, to ensure that children could make a meaningful contribution to the decision making process enabling them to express their opinions about the changes in their urban environment, and how these changes would impact their lives.
