Children and families at the heart of regeneration

Design Matters is a children’s participation programme run by Discover in partnership with local schools and Stratford City Development Partnership. An innovative programme facilitating children’s participation in decision making about the regeneration of east London with the development of Stratford City and the 2012 Olympics

Listening to Learn is a unique action research project for actively engaging children in regeneration – giving children hands on experience of design and environmental issues and the skills to influence how their environment might be shaped and be used in the future. This is an exciting model for developers, professionals and local authorities to engage with communities through children and their families. Between 2006 and 2008 over two hundred children aged 6 to 11 from Carpenters Primary School in Stratford, east London learnt about and responded to the changes proposed to their area by the development of Stratford City and the 2012 London Olympics. The project was devised and delivered by Discover in collaboration with the Stratford City Development Partnership, Carpenters Primary School and the University of East London. It was funded by NESTA, East Foundation, Sir John Cass’s Foundation, and supported by Westfield and Newham Council.
